Come Visit & Slow Down for Awhile…
A fitting slogan for the pace and lifestyle at Gundlach Bundschu Winery in Sonoma.
In the 1800’s when Jacob Gundlach first found himself down the long winding road towards the property, he fell in with the setting immediately and decided to… Stay for Awhile…
Present Day – The family line is still running the property and winery itself. California’s Oldest Family-Owned Winery.
For six generations and over 150 years, the family has farmed the Rhinefarm estate vineyard in Sonoma County, California. Rhinefarm’s 320 acres are intensively and sustain-ably hand-farmed all in small blocks according to the needs of each vine. The family is committed to farming the land and keeping the history alive at Gundlach Bundschu.
On April 6, 2016, from 5-6pmPST LIVE on Twitter, Gundlach Bundschu will answer your questions and Host a LIVE Conversation with wine-lovers using the hashtag #SonomaChat. Join them HERE @GunBunWine and follow the real time conversation.
Their location is only 5 minutes away from both the famous Sonoma Plaza and the Napa Border, making GunBun Winery convenient for visitors of California’s Wine Country. The road to the tasting room is surrounded by rows upon rows of vines sweeping up the mountainside ahead… you’ll feel a world away.
Preserving the family farm, embracing the local wine community and enhancing the local culture for generations to come is what I took away from my winery tour. Generation to Generation.
Perhaps you would like to enjoy cheese & charcuterie while lounging on the patio…
or enjoy an educational cave tour filled with libation…
or even go off the beaten path and up a vine covered mountain in an Austrian army vehicle…
ALL THREE options would be available to you and your friends at Gundlach Bundschu.
You can enjoy the bustle of the tasting room or skip the indoors altogether for a private table, small bites, a bottle of your favorite wine paired with a view of the vineyards. There is something here for all visitors to embrace.
Personally, I am looking forward to the Annual Huichica Music, Wine & Food Festival, starting soon in summertime, which welcomes a highly curated and handpicked line-up that draws on local talent (both musical and culinary) to provide a one-of-a-kind event. Live music, amazing food and a unique in-the-vineyard experience make the event so special to attendees.
A visit to Gundlach Bundschu Winery offers a winery experience the way it used to be:
Serene, rustic, and exquisite in character… all at the same time. There is an attention to detail complemented by old-world grace.
On my latest visit, we enjoyed a picnic and wine extravaganza on the terrace.
With a simple phone call to the winery, we reserved a spot, a cheese and charcuterie plate as well as a tour and tasting provided by winery staff. What a delight and how easy was that?!?
With gleaming glass in hand, we toured and sipped and photographed the lovely Sonoma County Estate.
The educational tour included a cave experience, a vineyard walk, a history lesson and lots of terrific wine to boot! We were able to meet Both Katie and Jeff Bundschu, members of the family, who were on hand to say hello along with their enthusiastic and lovable winery dog. Yes, GunBun is dog friendly as well. The family is often spotted at the winery.
Sipping the family’s wine and hearing the story from Jeff and Katie while surrounded by the vineyards their family has planted, gave me a deeper appreciation for the wines we enjoyed.
The family works closely with their own vines. With long standing traditions of hard work and careful craftsmanship, Gundlach Bundschu produces world-class wines that exhibit finesse, balance, and sense of place.
On the Southernmost point in Sonoma Valley, and flanked by the Carneros district to the south, Napa Valley to the east and nestled within the larger Sonoma Coast American Viticultural Area, lies Rhinefarm Vineyard.
With many ranges of elevation and all of the various climate influences, it is a broad variety of grapes grown here.
Sonoma County and California have an unparalleled wine history and Gundlach Bundschu is at the heart of it. Back in 1958 when the winery was first established, I wonder if the family knew the mark they were to leave on the region. Delicious memories are created here everyday…
Escape for the day to experience some of the most stunning views in Sonoma County on the 320 acre Gundlach Bundschu family farm.
Thank me later.

Sustainability in Sonoma County
From the Website: “At Gundlach Bundschu we define sustainability broadly, seeking not only to be responsible stewards of the land, but also to preserve this land for future generations of our family. There is nothing static about this view of sustainability — it requires innovation and action. We believe that preserving the unique ecosystem of Rhinefarm is essential to wine quality, as well as to the health of our family and business.
The introduction of beneficial predators, from owls and bluebirds to beetles and mites, and intensive pest monitoring allows us to minimize the use pesticides and herbicides. Cover crops contribute vital diversity and nutrition to the soils, and we utilize registered organic compounds and practices whenever possible. Vigilant management of our acute deficit irrigation program and water reclamation ponds promote conservation, recycling 70% of winery water. We continually seek ways to enhance environmental quality and make the most efficient use of our resources.
In November 2008, two new solar arrays were installed on our property. The first, a 1.3 acre 80kw system, provides 60% of the winery power. The second, a “floatovoltaic” system, was the first of its kind in Sonoma County. The panels float on our ponds and provide 100% of the power to our water reclamation system.
In June 2009, Gundlach Bundschu received our certification as a Bay Area Green Business from Sonoma County. And in 2012, we received our Fish Friendly Farming certification.”
