Donald Patz has a strong connection to Northern California’s Wine Country.
Patz is creating something unique, the fact that him returning to the business brings so many of his fans pleasure, must be very satisfying.
Winelovers, trade and media are eager to get a taste of this new project by a wine legend. Not to mention, a great guy.
The concept, it seems, is born from … a love story.
When Donald met this beautiful lady named Jung Min Lee and fell in love, he quickly realized that her preference was Bordeaux and Cabernet Sauvignon wine. Although, at the time, he was still heading up Patz & Hall and escorting her to wine dinners featuring mainly Pinot Noir wines. Boo.
Patz had promised Jung Min that if she would move to California from Virginia to be with him he would – someday – make a Cabernet Sauvignon wine for her.

Patz is no stranger to single vineyard greatness. Throughout his long wine career, he has been know to create wines that showcase individual vineyards on the valley floor and upon the hillsides of the Golden State.

Small batch quantities allows Patz to work on a new extension of his creative vision, his focus is clearly evident. Secret Door will be a showcase of Napa Valley’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon from a variety of top vineyard sources.
All from various Napa appellations. Incredibly varied characteristics depending on where the grapes were grown.
Most of these vineyards have low yields, which is oftentimes seen as a hallmark of higher-quality Cabernet Sauvignon, and a key element to success as a new Napa vintner. From Hirondelle Vineyard in Stags Leap District to Sage Ridge on the hillsides just east of St Helena.
If you take the history and talent of a wine making legend like Patz, take into account the current trends in the industry and combine this with the right vineyard location and conditions… you get a very desirable bottle of wine.
The result here is pure Napa Valley… complex, densely structured, and equally beautiful to sip or to cellar for a special moment later. Everyone is talking. Similar to any speculative frenzy, The Secret Door Cabernet, is one to get before it’s too late.
This new project shows a renewed passion for making wine after a brief hiatus to help with the transition of the sale at Patz & Hall. Of course this juice is available in limited quantities.
Tastings with this wine are producing outstanding acclaim… a wine that even this young… already has developed nice character and looks to be a bottle than can truly evolve over the next few years. With Donald Patz at the helm of this new wine project, I am making sure to get in while it is still possible. First release was a small allocation of his 2014 Napa Cab from a “Secret” location of course.
With a large and dedicated group of wine lovers ecstatic to begin speculating after seeing the exponential value in a new wine project by Patz, the mailing list seems to be filling up quick even with the first wine release coming only last month in February of 2018.
