It wasn’t just the nostalgia, it was the art displayed, it was the history respected,
it was a little slice of the 1960’s…
The Astro Motel in Santa Rosa, California is a one of a kind destination in Sonoma County Wine Country. With a great price point for travelers looking for a more budget friendly option for lodging in the region.
The extra savings will leave you extra room in the pocketbook for MORE wine and good times during your stay. Time to get planning!!
The newest addition to the hotel scene is A RETRO REMODEL by the owners of popular restaurant, The Spinster Sisters… which is only a few blocks away for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The ambitious team spent months, if not years, amassing furniture and decor items… all authentic to the time. Instead of re-creations of items, they bought the real thing from the 60’s. Fantastic vintage pieces of furniture, art and nostalgia.
Every detail was thought of when it comes to guests feeling truly transported back in time to the 60’s motor-lodge heydays. Guests who can’t seem to part with the desk or vase or lighting fixture they’ve enjoyed during their stay needn’t despair because the furniture acquired for the property is also for sale.
The Astro will have the entire collection online, so that guests can peek at—and purchase from—the ever-changing inventory.
Thanks to the whole Astro team for having me, my stay was delightful and the staff was wonderful. Read on for more details and videos of THE ASTRO MOTEL and The Spinster Sisters Restaurant.
The actual building itself WAS built in 1963 in the heyday of the American motor lodge, The Astro was ambitiously remodeled with original mid-century modern furnishings, a lush edible garden filled with the smells of all the fruit filled citrus trees, and a passion for Sonoma County’s limitless offerings of wine, food and art. Everything is right at hand.
Plus, this place is soo cute!
The Astro is located in the Santa Rosa local art district right next to the downtown square making it convenient for travelers.
Especially to those travelers who enjoy art and walking the town.
Now, thanks to a thoughtful and ambitious remodel carried out by area artists and artisans, it stands brightly in the geographic center of a world class vacation destination. An area that only recently endured devastating fires. The Astro even helped house and support fire victims before the actual opening when they saw the need in the community.
With 34 rooms and suites the property was born again. Up until the Spinster Sisters team took over, The Astro had been, for decades, a neighborhood blight and way too rundown for any type of business. The official opening was January 18, 2018.
Built and managed by native Sonoma County folk, I like to support local around here and so do the other locals.
Santa Rosa has the largest population in Sonoma County and also has the benefit of being a central location in the region so that you can travel to most wineries, restaurants and sightseeing spots in only a half hours drive.
Sonoma is large and this helps travelers looking to visit many areas of wine country without driving unnecessarily for an hour or more. That is how long it can take to get across the County.
The location is right next door to the historic Juilliard Park and also close to Santa Rosa tourist destinations and many food locations in walking distance from your room.
They have a good walking and transportation score here and even without a car, guests can get around easily via their own legs (walking), biking, uber drivers or even public transpo is right at the doorstep of the Astro.
The location even has Shinola Bikes on site for rental. How cool is that?!?
Facing out to the garden courtyard, each room has a view and is furnished with original mid-century modern pieces acquired at auctions across the country.
They feature a curated selection of snacks, amenities and touches of Sonoma County in the room and in the on site lounge from some of the Astro team’s favorite makers and doers around town.
