With an ever changing seasonal menu, cheese & charcuterie platters that rock, and plenty of outdoor garden patio seating, you can guess that I’ve visited ‘the girl and the fig’ many a time before. A great stop for tourists and locals alike, Owner, Sondra Bernstein plates a fierce meal.
The menu at the girl and the fig in Sonoma features garden vegetables, herbs, and the rustic Provencal-inspired cuisine that allows natural flavors to come out on top. They have been around since opening their doors in Glen Ellen in 1997 and now have a lovely space in the northwest corner of the Sonoma town square.
I love to start the meal with one of Sondra’s signature dishes which is a memorable salad prepared with arugula, goat cheese, pancetta, pecans, and grilled fresh figs in season. Fig girl at her best.
For the wine lovers visiting Sonoma County, the list concentrates on wines made with Rhône varietals from California and abroad. Wine flights paired with local artisan cheeses are a popular light meal.
On my last visit, my friend Steve and I dined on the patio while on our way to Broadway Under the Stars. This Wine Country Concert Series takes place in Glen Ellen at Jack London State Park.
I would highly recommend attending one of the shows just as much as I would recommend dining at the girl and the fig in Sonoma beforehand.
Broadway Under The Stars in a yearly event featuring Broadway performers taking center stage in the winery ruins of Jack London’s home, what a unique and picturesque setting.
Since we had somewhere to be, we did not order wine on the last visit but instead tried a refreshing cocktail featuring Elderflower Liquor from St Germain, vodka, cucmber and a splash of lemon juice I believe. Fantastic.
I have been ordering cocktails with Elderflower in them ever since. At this Sonoma restaurant, they have an inviting cocktail list that also seems to change with the seasons, I would recommend trying one. Or go Rhone style with your wine and ask the Sommlier for a recommendation.
With a healthy balance of elegance and offbeat chef personality, unparalleled cuisine and attentive staff, the result is a refreshingly unique and wholly pleasurable dining experience that will linger long after the meal itself.
I also had the special that day which was the artic char. And again, this ranks among the best fish entrees I have ever eaten. And I love seafood.
The skin on the char had just the perfect crispness and the fish was cooked just right underneath. The flavors of the tomatoes, and I believe it was fennel were superb and like the restaurant boasts….very fresh with the natural taste of the ingredients starring in the show.
Brava Sondra and the staff at the girl and the fig in Sonoma, California.
Until the next visit, Chin Chin…
